Forty-two year veteran of the trumpet, mastering many styles, Steve has performed and recorded in a wide variety of situations and with some of the music industry’s top names. Comfortable in any chair of the trumpet section, from a commanding lead player to a swinging jazz soloist, his tenure on the trumpet has provided him with an unmistakable sound and style, and an unusual level of versatility.
A native of Southern California, Steve developed his musical style and ability at a young age by studying and playing with some of the greatest trumpet players in the music business local to the Los Angeles area. All the while he worked as a studio musician and constantly performed live with groups of various styles, playing everything from big band jazz to Latin salsa and contemporary top 40. While living near Hollywood, Steve also worked in the television and film industry with credits that include repeated appearances on such shows as the Tracy Ulman Show, Falcon Crest, Dynasty, and ABC’s Television Special “Story of a Mafia Wife” starring Melissa Gilbert, as well as soundtrack recordings for public broadcasting and countless commercial television and radio jingles.
In 1993 Steve relocated to the Portland Oregon area and soon became one of the Pacific Northwest’s most sought after trumpet players. While living in Portland, Steve taught trumpet privately and appeared regularly in a variety of situations and with a number of the area’s most popular groups including the Lloyd Jones Struggle, Pink Martini, and Rubberneck to name only a few while also making major concert appearances supporting an impressive list of internationally acclaimed recording artists to include: Arturo Sandoval, David Sanborn, recent Grammy Award winner Delbert McClinton, Manhattan Transfer, Diane Schuur, composer and comedian Steve Allen, The Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown Big Band, Mary Wilson and the Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Spinners, Frankie Valle and the Four Seasons, and the Fifth Dimension.
After 16 successful years in Portland, Steve relocated once again and now resides in Bangkok Thailand where he performs regularly with his piano playing brother, Randy Cannon at the internationally acclaimed “Living Room” jazz club in the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Hotel in Bangkok. Steve also appears regularly with Thailand’s premier saxophone celebrity, Saxman Koh, at local clubs and festivals and travels throughout Southeast Asia for special event concerts and international jazz festivals.
As a recording artist, Steve has been involved in countless CD projects supporting various artists but stepped into the spotlight with his own 1999 debut CD release entitled “Nowhere Man”, a smooth jazz style recording co-produced with acclaimed pianist and brother, Randy Cannon. More recently Steve returned to his musical roots, leading and recording a swingin’ Big Band that romps and roars behind him. The award winning 2006 release of “Full Blown” by Steve Cannon and the Blow Hard Big Band continues to receive rave reviews. Named “2006 Best Album of the Year” by “All About Jazz” Magazine and a finalist in the 2007 International Independent Music Awards, the “Full Blown” recording also found Steve invited along with a list of legendary jazz musicians for a command performance for His Majesty the King of Thailand.
He does it all; everything from straight ahead jazz to toe tapping Latin rhythms, and smooth sultry ballads to screaming high notes that leave you on the edge of you seat. Steve’s versatility and musicianship is sure to entertain even the most discerning of audiences.
